The Table

The Saturday Table

Saturdays are for friends. Every Saturday, my girlfriends and I walk to The Gables in Foxrock, sit at the same table if we can get it, and stay for hours.

We talk about our families, work, our next trip together, and, inevitably, Spanish politics. No matter how many years we've been away, none of us can quite let go of that one. We discuss nothing in particular, but cover everything at the same time.

I have lived in Ireland for twenty-one years, fifteen of them here in Foxrock. When you build a life in a country you weren't born in, you learn to see things a little differently. You gain a new perspective, but you lose something too: your ordinary, your network of people who simply know how things are done, family and important friends. When you move somewhere new, you have to build that life from the very beginning, piece by piece, year after year, often without knowing what pieces will last.

These four women are the pieces that lasted. Seventeen years ago, we found each other here, far from where any of us started, and somewhere along the way we stopped being five women who happened to live in the same place and became something closer to sisterhood. I would go the distance for any of them.

We shot this collection at The Gables, with two of my daughters at the core of the story. Somehow it felt right to bring the camera to the place where so much of what matters to me actually happens.

Noema James has never felt like only a fashion label. So much of the life I have built here finds its way into it: the work, the family, the women who hold it all together on a Saturday afternoon, and the country that let a stranger become, eventually, someone with roots.
